The outlets pushed back. CNN said it has a constitutional right to report without government interference, and that enforcing the ban would be an illegal assault on that right. Politico said it would defend its First Amendment rights vigorously and called Trump’s claims that it received government subsidies false and debunked.
The move follows earlier fights over press access. In 2018, the White House revoked CNN reporter Jim Acosta’s credential, and a federal judge ordered it restored. Last year, the administration barred the AP from some events, prompting a First Amendment case that is still pending. The D.C.
